    Summary

    The VA Learning Opportunities Residency VALOR Program is a student internship program designed to attract academically successful students in Pharm.D. programs to ultimately work at VA as clinical pharmacists after graduation. This program gives outstanding students the opportunity to develop competencies in clinical pharmacy at an approved VA facility. Opportunities for learning include didactic or classroom experiences and competency-based clinical practice with a qualified pharmacy preceptor.

    Responsibilities

    The Pharmacy VALOR Student works under the supervision of a registered pharmacist preceptor. The purpose of the Pharmacy VALOR program is to encourage pharmacy students to become VA pharmacists upon graduation or residency completion. Program length is a 400 maximum hours during the summer between the students second and third professional years and a maximum of 400 hours during the third professional year. The VALOR student will work with pharmacists providing care in all areas served.

    Functions:

    1. Works with pharmacist preceptor in medication use evaluation, medication safety, and quality improvement programs, Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee, and VA Central California Health Care System Medical Center.
    2. Attends committee meetings as directed by preceptor or Chief of Pharmacy.
    3. Learns about the management and reporting of adverse drug reactions and medication errors within the facility.
    Interpersonal Relations/Customer Service:
    1. Identifies the customer's/patient's situation properly and performs the tasks required to resolve the customer's/patient's problem accurately and in a timely manner. Follows-up, as necessary, to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
    2. Responds courteously to supervisor patients, visitors, co-workers, and the general public, giving correct and complete information.
    3. Provides verbal and/or written information that is thorough and correct, using clear and precise communication methods to ensure that customers understand. The information is usually provided in a timely manner.
    4. Interacts in a professional and courteous manner with managers and other employees to facilitate the accomplishment of the work of the organization.

    1. Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc., as set out in the computer access agreement that the employee signs.
    Work Schedule: M-F, 8 am - 4:30 pm - A minimum of 400 hours required, NTE 800 hours of work by January 2, 2020.
