In your first year as a Jardine Executive Trainee you’ll be exposed to the many facets of our Group, giving you the chance to explore our various businesses. From there, you’ll spend your remaining years honing your managerial skills and learning to face the challenges of your chosen industry.

How many graduate trainees will Jardines take on each year?
We do not have a quota. We will take on as many trainees as possible, as long as they meet our selection criteria and excel in their performance at the Assessment Centre.
What happens at an Assessment Centre?
At the Assessment Centre, candidates will undergo a rigorous round of assessments including a group case discussion, business presentation, psychometric tests, and a series of panel interviews. Senior Executives from Group HR and the business (Group Companies) will be invited to the Assessment Centre as observers.
The schemes commence in September of each year. Please only apply to the scheme if you are able to start.
If I am unsuccessful in my application, can I re-apply?
We receive a high volume of applications for the graduate schemes each year. To be fair to all applicants, we will only consider your application once. If you are unsuccessful this round, your application will not be considered again.
Do you recruit for the graduate trainees on a rolling basis?
No, we will only commence the screening process after the application deadline of each Assessment Centre. For example, we will only begin to screen applications for the Singapore Assessment Centre after 1 October (application deadline). Your application will be considered as long as you submit it before the deadline – it does not matter whether you submit 6 months before or 1 day before the deadline. Please refer to the ‘Application Process’ for the details.
Do you hire graduate trainees with some work experience?
The graduate trainee schemes are targeted at mainly fresh graduates. Whilst we have taken in trainees with some work experience in the past, do note that salaries will only commensurate with the local market rates for a fresh graduate rather than your work experience. If you have been working for a number of years, you may want to consider if this is the right scheme for you.
Can I make a speculative application by email?
Applications must be made through the online application form, which can be found on Here. Speculative applications by any other method will not be considered.
When will I hear back?
We aim to inform you if you are shortlisted for the online psychometric tests, within two to three weeks after the application deadline of each Assessment Centre. Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we can only notify shortlisted candidates. If you do not hear back from us after one month of the application deadline, you may assume your application is not successful.
How long is the process from beginning to end?
We aim to move candidates quickly through our recruitment process and keep you informed at each stage. On average it is 3 weeks but this may be slightly longer in very busy periods.
Will I receive feedback after each stage of the recruitment process?
Due to the high volume of applications we receive, please understand that we are not able to provide feedback to all candidates at each stage of the recruitment process. However, if you successfully progress to the Assessment Centre, we do ensure that you are provided with feedback at the end of the day on the areas you have performed well in and opportunities for you to do better.
Who is in charge of my career and development?
You. However, you will also have a strong support system at your disposal in the form of GHR for your long term career and general management development, GA for your technical development and postings (particularly during the first 3 years), and your own alumni to get you through those emotionally tough times, which will occasionally occur.
Will I receive any management/leadership training during my first 3 years?
Yes. In addition to the personal coaching you will receive, you will also join the modular executive management development which will advance your leadership capabilities.
Do I have a choice about which business I work in?
Yes, but it also depends on whether the business is suitable for the stage of training you are at and if it is willing to have a JET.
Can I anticipate assuming a management role as soon as I qualify?
Depends on the impression you’ve created with the unit you will be joining. If they feel you are up to it and they offer you such a position, then JM would support you to the hilt. The overall goal of JETS is to develop our leaders of tomorrow, so that within 15 years they are leading one of our businesses. However, this has to be earned and requires more from the trainee than passing the exams. Think of it as a marathon, rather than a sprint.
Will I stay in the same company for the rest of my career?
Your career path (and upward mobility) lies in Jardine Matheson and as such opportunities for you will potentially lie in all the Group Companies but this will be influenced by your decision on your career path. After Year 1 you are required to select an industry, then work through that (The Scheme is shown elsewhere).
Do we all get the same salaries when we qualify?
Your salaries will be calibrated against those of the market (e.g., the Big 4) and the company you are joining. For those pursuing a finance path, this is more predictable. For those following a generalist track it is not as straight forward. Indeed, it’s conceivable that you may even have to take a temporary step backwards in order to move forwards. However, it’s important to balance off all aspects of the scheme and career opportunities – not just $. However, once you have completed your 3 years+ training, you will be paid the market rate for that role.
How do I get postings outside of Hong Kong?
You signal this desire and if an overseas posting arises, you are deemed suitable and the timing is right, you will have quite a good chance of getting it. Indeed, we will actively encourage people to take overseas postings.
How high up Jardines can I expect to get?
It depends entirely on your ability (with perhaps just a little luck) – there is no limit.
After qualifying am I a Jardine Matheson employee or an employee of the unit to which I am working for?
It depends. Some of the largest companies (e.g. public companies) may require you to move onto their contracts. Either way you need to try your utmost to become part of that team for the 4+ years you are likely to remain there. This may mean making certain temporary sacrifices. For example, some companies work Saturday mornings, others don’t.
What happens if I don’t like the company or job I’m in?
This undoubtedly happens from time to time. The first thing we recommend is that you stick at it, as the relationship and reputation you build in that company will reflect on all other JETs. It will also determine how receptive that company will be to trainees in the future. Secondly, evaluation of your ability rests not just on your exam results and technical competence, but also your ability to get on with others and manage the situation – be it good or bad. However, in special circumstances, changes can be made.
