    Salary: $28,078 (Step 01) to $36,500 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

    The USGS Nebraska Water Science Center is seeking (select: high school, associate, undergraduate, graduate level) student working towards a degree in (physical or natural science, or engineering, Biology) to gain practical experience in (geologic sampling, water quality, etc.).

    As a Student Trainee (Hydrologist) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of Hydrology.

    Duties include:

    • Gathering basic hydrologic data concerning any one or a combination of four areas, i.e., quantity, quality, availability, and movement and distribution of water.
    • Developing hydrologic and precipitation data for current projects.
    • Collecting and processing data to be used in computing stream discharge, determining ground water availability or calculating sediment, chemical, or biological concentrations and physical characteristics.
    • You will be required to operate a government-owned or leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties
    Work Environment and Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking on rough or uneven surfaces, recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing less than 50 pounds such as lifting and carrying stream gauging weights, data collection and monitoring devices or sample trays. Work involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with visiting field sites with limited access, under adverse weather or flooding conditions or exposure to irritant or toxic chemicals.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel on average 1 to 2 nights per month for this position.
